Hi - thanks for your comment. I saw you run a hosting service. When you talk about increasing physical memory, do you mean allocating more RAM on the server? - Scott [Ed.]

The tweak to LAMP is subjective and really depends on individual cases, the close MySQL connection faster tweak may work on some situation but may result in further overheads for open close and open connections again, this is especially the case when there is a lot of new connections per minute, closing the connection faster does free up memory and allowing more resources for other program to resident in the memory, which means less swap space use and less delay for the disk write in/out. If the site receives lots of new connections, the better approach is still increase physical memory and cache some frequently used mysql tables in memory for faster retrieval.

Hello Tal -- I agree that the shared bandwidth could be part of the problem, as ours is a "virtual" private server (VPS), which means it is a kind of glorified shared hosting with it's own apache, mysql, Web Host Manager (WHM) control system. I'm not sure that I believe that true dedicated servers, where you get your own server, from a reputable firm are "scams," however. Do you have any evidence of that? - Scott

I wouldn't rule out ISP problems, even if your hops were normal a dedicated server still shares bandwidth with many users and can slow down the load time of your website.
"Dedicated server" is just another scam, I highly doubt its any different than a shared server.

Great post nonetheless, thanks for the tips.

Thanks,
Tal Lifschitz,
